NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope arrived at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 21 aboard the agency's Pegasus barge, beginning roughly 70 days of prelaunch processing before a targeted launch no earlier than August 30, 2026, on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The $4.3 billion observatory will join the orbital ranks of Hubble, Webb, Spitzer, and Chandra as one of NASA's flagship astrophysics missions, but with a unique capability: a field of view 100 times wider than Hubble's, allowing it to survey vast swaths of the sky at high resolution. Roman will investigate dark energy, discover thousands of exoplanets via gravitational microlensing, and conduct the most comprehensive infrared survey of the cosmos ever attempted.
The telescope's arrival at KSC marks the transition from years of development at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center to the final sprint toward launch. Roman carries a 2.4-meter primary mirror — the same size as Hubble's — but its wide-field instrument can image an area of sky equivalent to the full moon in a single exposure, compared to Hubble's pinhole-sized field of view.
