The satellite is designed to maneuver within the GEO belt, approaching other spacecraft to assess their status, identify anomalies, and provide detailed characterization data that ground-based telescopes simply cannot match. Astranis says the product is aimed at both government and commercial customers who need to know what is happening near their most valuable orbital assets.
The timing aligns with a broader shift in the space domain awareness market. The Pentagon recently awarded 14 companies more than $1.8 billion in Andromeda contracts for next-generation GEO surveillance, and commercial SSA providers like LeoLabs, ExoAnalytic Solutions, and Slingshot Aerospace are building out the analytics layer. But most of those efforts focus on tracking objects from a distance. Perceptor represents something different: a commercial offering that physically goes to GEO and operates alongside the satellites it's watching. For satellite operators who need to understand whether an approaching object is a piece of debris, a malfunctioning neighbor, or something more deliberate, that proximity intelligence is invaluable.

Astranis will also need to demonstrate that Perceptor's propulsion and guidance systems are reliable enough to operate safely in a belt where a collision could create debris endangering hundreds of billion-dollar assets.
